At the end of the north western train line, lies Windsor - a small historical town, framed with lots of pretty tree-lined streets. Nestled on the magnificent Hawkesbury River, it is far enough from the city to have a friendly safe feel, but it's still on the train line for easy access.
Blessed with rich alluvial soil, the area was first established by Governor Macquarie who used it to grow food for the colony. Flood prone land has always been a major concern for Windsor, however the upside has resulted in the prevention of urban sprawl and retaining the historic character of this beautiful town.
Having said that, there are lots of new restaurants and developments starting to pop up in Windsor. There are two new shopping centres that include a Coles and a Woolworths, a main pedestrian area that displays an array of smaller shops, plus plenty of pubs and bars for a good night’s entertainment. Locals love flocking to the Sunday Markets every week and the fine dining restaurants proudly use local produce with dedicated chefs putting lots of love and inspiration into their creations.
Windsor is also a popular venue for all types of festivals including the Sydney Blues Festival, Red Bull Cliff Diving, International Sand Modelling competition and the Bridge to Bridge Water Ski Race.
And then of course you have the tranquil Hawkesbury river. Take an old fashioned cruise on a Paddlewheeler, launch your boat from the boat ramp for a thrilling day of waterskiing, or just soak up the ambience at Governor Phillip Park where you can enjoy a shady picnic and watch the kids play on the playground.
For the enthusiastic epicureans, there’s the Hawkesbury Harvest Farm Gate Trail where you and taste, buy or discover Sydney's rural treasures. Or for history buffs, admire the treasures at the Regional Gallery, the Regional Museum and take a heritage walk through the town.
When you have had enough of the past, enjoy a day of pampering at Villa Thalgo day spa, or just head 10 minutes out to the Rouse Hill Town Centre - Australia's most modern mega shopping village.
